Benefits of a Doula

There are many benefits to having a doula. A birth doula respects your decisions and honours the choices you make for way in which you would like to birth your baby. She is constantly present during labour - from the time you choose for her to join you, until some time after baby is born. During this time, the doula will help you with comfort measures in labour, giving birth as you choose and if so desired, to establish breastfeeding. I've personally witnessed newborns of my clients who were placed skin to skin on mom's chest, creep up to find mom's breast and begin breastfeeding themselves.

* Recent studies have shown that in births where a doula was present, mom's coping is much improved and birthing parents have a much more satisfying birth experience:

  • Reduction in the need for cesarean birth
  • Length of labour reduced by 25%
  • Oxytocin use reduced by 40%
  • Use of narcotics reduced by 30%
  • Forceps reduced by 30%
  • Epidurals reduced by 60%
  • Improved breastfeeding
  • Increased time spent with baby
  • Decreased postpartum depression

Once baby is home, a postpartum doula assists with newborn tasks and helps the family with the transition to parenthood or in the case where there are siblings, helps the siblings, the newborn and the family, easing the transition for everyone.
